Nelson Mandela- Nobel Peace Prize 1993

Nelson Mandela has received more than hundred awards for his efforts in South Africa and the world. The most prestigious among the awards he won is the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Nelson Mandela served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before that, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC).

The South African courts convicted Mandela on charges of sabotage, among other alleged crimes committed while he led the movement against apartheid. He served 27 years in prison

Mandela, after his retirement, continues to be active sharing his opinion in important topics in The Elders group.

In South Africa, he is commonly known as Madiba, an honorary title that is adopted by the elders of Mandela clan.He is now often referred as Mandiba.

  1. Hi, your post reminded me of one of Nelson Mandela's quotes: "I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself. I dream of the realization of the unity of Africa, whereby its leaders combine in their efforts to solve the problems of this continent." When he was released from prison, he showed the world how we can work towards peace through democracy, equality, reconciliation, diversity, responsibility, respect and freedom.
